LAWMA Seizes Waste Carts, Arrests Suspect in Early-Morning Lagos Island Operation

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has seized waste carts and arrested an individual during an early-morning enforcement operation on Lagos Island, aimed at curbing illegal waste disposal.

The development was disclosed in a statement on Monday by Mr. Mukaila Sanusi, LAWMA’s Director of Public Affairs.

Sanusi said the operation followed targeted surveillance to tackle unregulated waste movement and prevent a return of illegal dump sites previously cleared by the authority.

“LAWMA enforcement officers intercepted several waste carts at Isale-Eko during the coordinated dawn operation across key locations on Lagos Island,” he said.

An individual was arrested at approximately 1:31 a.m. for illegally dumping waste at Tinubu Square, Lagos Island.

Sanusi noted that early-hour monitoring is crucial because most illegal dumping activities occur during low-visibility periods.

Quoting LAWMA Managing Director Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, he said:

“Sustained enforcement strengthens deterrence and protects stabilised areas from renewed environmental abuse. Surveillance and enforcement operatives are strategically deployed statewide to eliminate persistent black spots and ensure environmental sustainability.”

He urged residents to use approved waste disposal channels and support LAWMA’s efforts to maintain a clean and safe Lagos environment.
