Lagos residents have been advised to adopt stronger waste reduction and disposal habits as continuous heavy rainfall puts increasing strain on the city’s waste management systems.
The Managing Director of the Lagos Waste Management Authority, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, gave the advice in a statement issued in Lagos, explaining that ongoing rainfall combined with intensified waste evacuation activities has created significant pressure on disposal infrastructure across the state.
He said the situation has slowed truck movement, extended turnaround times and reduced efficiency at several landfill and disposal sites. According to him, these challenges have also affected evacuation schedules for Private Sector Participation operators and sanitation workers who continue to operate under difficult weather conditions.
Gbadegesin added that the agency is working with relevant stakeholders and introducing operational adjustments to improve access routes and sustain waste disposal activities throughout the rainy period.
He encouraged residents to support these efforts by generating less waste where possible, ensuring proper bagging of refuse and embracing waste sorting practices at the household level.
He explained that separating recyclable and organic materials at source would ease pressure on disposal facilities, improve efficiency and promote more sustainable waste management practices.
The agency head further noted that such habits would support Lagos State’s shift toward a more circular economy and better resource recovery systems.
Gbadegesin also praised PSP operators, drivers, sanitation crews and other field personnel for maintaining service delivery despite the operational difficulties caused by the weather.
He expressed optimism that with continued cooperation between residents and waste management teams, environmental sanitation across Lagos would remain stable and improve in the coming weeks.
