Lagos introduces ferry safety mentorship scheme to improve water transport standards
The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), in collaboration with Interferry, has rolled out what is described as Africa’s first Ferry Safety Development and Mentoring Programme aimed at improving safety practices, operational efficiency, and professionalism in the water transport sector.
This was contained in a statement issued in Lagos by the Special Adviser to the Governor on the Blue Economy, Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, on Monday.
According to him, the initiative is expected to transform ferry operations across the continent by strengthening safety culture and raising industry standards among operators.
He explained that the 18-month programme will involve mentorship from Interferry specialists as well as experts from maritime institutions, private companies, and regulatory agencies within Nigeria.
A total of 50 participants, including vessel captains, engineers, and safety officers, were selected following a verification process carried out on March 18.
The programme, scheduled to commence in May 2026, will run on a hybrid learning model, combining online sessions, virtual mentorship, and monthly hands-on training.
Key areas of focus include ferry design and construction, safety management systems, maritime regulations, and both preventive and predictive maintenance techniques.
The initiative, according to him, reflects the state government’s drive to enhance water transport safety and build a more efficient and globally competitive ferry system.
