Lagos Initiates Public Awareness Drive on Correct Use of Emergency Numbers

Lagos State Command and Control Centre has launched a public awareness campaign to educate residents on the proper use of its emergency toll-free lines, 767 and 112.

Mr. Kennedy Giwa, the Centre’s General Manager, told journalists on Wednesday in Lagos that the initiative is part of the state government’s ongoing efforts to improve public safety and emergency responsiveness.

He explained that the campaign is particularly timely as the state prepares for the busy Ember months, when emergencies often spike during the festive period, commonly referred to as “Dirty December.”

“This period records high numbers of incidents, making it essential to ensure Lagosians know how to effectively use the toll-free numbers 767 and 112, which connect callers directly to trained call agents for immediate response,” Giwa said.

Recent surveys revealed that many residents remain unaware of these emergency lines, a finding Giwa described as “astonishing.” He stressed that accurate information can transform communities by enhancing citizens’ ability to respond promptly during emergencies.

Giwa warned against prank calls or misuse of the emergency lines, noting that such acts delay response to real emergencies and waste valuable resources.

“We encourage Lagosians to act responsibly and promptly, reporting emergencies instead of sharing sensitive material on social media,” he added.

He commended Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for investing in state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure at the Command and Control Centre, noting that the upgrades place the centre on par with those in developed countries.

The Centre remains committed to building a responsive, resilient, and safety-conscious Lagos, ensuring that citizens are prepared to act quickly in emergencies. Members of the public are urged to dial 767 or 112 in any emergency, as both lines operate toll-free 24 hours daily.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, highlighted the importance of collaboration between government agencies and citizens, encouraging residents to report incidents promptly to help safeguard their communities.

The campaign launch featured a walk from the Command and Control Centre to Computer Village, Ikeja, with participation from key emergency management stakeholders in the state.
