Lagos Hosts Premiere of New Superhero Movie Osamede

The much-anticipated superhero film Osamede made its grand debut in Lagos ahead of its nationwide release scheduled for Oct. 17.

The movie, told entirely in the Edo language, is set for theatrical release across Nigeria, the UK, and North America within the next three weeks.

Executive Producer Lilian Olubi, in a statement on Wednesday in Lagos, explained that the film’s production followed the success of 12 stage performances that demonstrated strong audience interest.

Olubi, who also serves on the board of the Nigerian Exchange, noted that Osamede was shot on location in Fugar and Ososo, Edo State, with careful cultural guidance to ensure authenticity.

According to her, the story centers on a young woman who discovers her ancestral powers through a sacred stone.

“The Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Dr. Jumoke Oduwole, joined key industry figures at the Lagos premiere of Osamede, which earned a standing ovation from the audience,” she said.

She added that the film received its first standing ovation during its Oct. 10 premiere in Edo State, where the story unfolds against the backdrop of the 1897 British invasion of the Benin Kingdom.

Olubi highlighted that the minister’s attendance reflects the government’s acknowledgment of the creative industry as a vital component of Nigeria’s economy.

“With more than 17 million Nigerians in the diaspora and a growing appetite for authentic African storytelling, Osamede represents both cultural pride and economic opportunity,” she said.

Director James Omokwe, an award-winning filmmaker, praised the team’s dedication and described the production as a passion-driven project.

“Lilian believed in this story when it was just a stage play. She had a vision for what it could become on screen, and that conviction inspired everyone involved,” Omokwe said.

Lead actress Ivie Egboh revealed that she underwent weeks of language training to perfect her Edo lines, commending the team’s insistence on authenticity.

“The filmmakers made sure every line honoured the language and the culture, and that level of respect pushed us to deliver our best performances,” she said.

Co-star William Benson, who played the antagonist, also praised the production team for creating a professional and inspiring atmosphere on set.

He described the experience as one that showcased the strength, creativity, and global potential of Nigeria’s film industry.
