Lagos Governor Calls for Enhanced Protection of Children and Schools

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has called for stronger national action to safeguard children and educational institutions amid rising insecurity across the country.

The governor made the appeal on Friday during the grand finale of the 2026 Children’s Day celebration organised by the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education in Ikeja.

He expressed concern over recent incidents of violence in parts of the country, including the killing of teachers in Oyo State, describing it as a disturbing sign of worsening threats to the education sector.

Sanwo-Olu said it was unacceptable to celebrate Children’s Day while many children, teachers and families continue to suffer the impact of violent attacks.

He urged security agencies and the Federal Government to intensify efforts aimed at rescuing victims of abductions and strengthening protection around schools nationwide.

According to him, all levels of government must work together to ensure that schools are safe environments where learning can take place without fear or disruption.

The governor stressed that the rights of children to education, safety and life must be upheld through deliberate and sustained policy actions.

He was represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin, who delivered his address.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, said the theme of the celebration underscored the need to protect children’s rights and expand their opportunities.

The theme, “Listen to the Future, Stand Up for Children’s Rights,” focused on ensuring access to education, safety, expression and equal opportunities for children across the country.

Alli-Balogun noted that activities lined up for the celebration were designed to boost students’ confidence, creativity and participation in inclusive learning environments across Lagos State.

He listed events such as youth forums, career talks, debates, cultural displays, religious services and a children’s parade rally.

He added that students showcased creativity and awareness through debates and cultural performances held during the week-long programme.

According to him, the presentations highlighted the importance of cultural identity, youth involvement and national development.

The commissioner reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safe schools and policies that empower children to grow into responsible future leaders.

He also said the annual celebration remains part of Lagos State’s broader effort to promote enrolment into public primary schools and encourage education development initiatives.
