An All Progressives Congress (APC) member in Lagos State, Mr. Sawyer Sunday, has distributed food items and cash assistance to over 1,000 vulnerable residents to ease hardship and support them during the festive season.
The empowerment outreach took place on Sunday at Nawarudeen Secondary School, Oyingbo, Lagos, and targeted elderly persons, widows, and other less-privileged members of the community.
Speaking with journalists at the event, Sunday explained that the initiative was organised to help families celebrate the yuletide with dignity, joy, and a sense of relief amid prevailing economic challenges.
He said the gesture aligns with ongoing social welfare efforts of the Federal Government and reflects collaboration between grassroots political actors and national initiatives aimed at improving citizens’ wellbeing.
“This outreach is about sharing the joy of the season. By giving rice and financial support, we want to ensure families have food on their tables while complementing President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to bring hope and smiles to Nigerians,” he said.
Also speaking, a former councillor, Mr. Jimoh Kamal, described the programme as timely and impactful, noting that many beneficiaries had little or no means to celebrate the festive period before the intervention.
“The happiness on their faces shows the importance of this gesture. Some of them had nothing for the season, but today they received food and money,” he said.
The Ward A Coordinator of Lagos Mainland, Mrs. Adenike Adeleye, said the outreach demonstrated responsive and people-centred leadership, stressing that effective governance begins with understanding and addressing the immediate needs of citizens.
She added that the initiative helped bring government support directly to the grassroots, particularly at a critical time like the festive season.
One of the beneficiaries, identified as Iya Biliku, expressed gratitude for the support, saying the assistance had brought joy and relief to her household.
“I sincerely thank him for this kindness. It has truly made this festive season meaningful for us,” she said.
