Lokoja, June 1, 2026 — The Kogi State Government has announced the immediate suspension of the Echane Festival in Ebiraland due to security concerns.
The decision was disclosed on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, who said the move followed credible intelligence indicating that activities linked to the festival could pose risks to public peace in parts of Kogi Central Senatorial District.
He explained that the intelligence report suggested a possible breakdown of law and order if the celebrations were allowed to proceed.
According to him, Governor Ahmed Ododo approved the suspension as a precautionary measure aimed at safeguarding lives and maintaining stability across the state.
While acknowledging the cultural significance of traditional festivals, the government stressed that the protection of citizens remains its top priority.
Security agencies have been directed to enforce the suspension order across all affected communities, the commissioner added.
He also warned that individuals or groups attempting to organise or promote activities connected to the suspended festival would face legal consequences.
The government urged traditional rulers, community heads, youth groups and residents to cooperate with security operatives in ensuring peace and order.
Fanwo reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to proactive security measures and maintaining stability across Kogi State.
The Echane Festival, a prominent annual masquerade celebration in Ebiraland, is usually held across communities such as Ihima, Okene, Adavi and Eika between April and June, featuring cultural displays, music and traditional performances.
