Kidnapped pupils and teachers: CPNN calls for urgent rescue as Children’s Day celebrations are dimmed

In Ibadan, the Oyo State chapter of the Child Protection Network Nigeria (CPNN) has said that worsening insecurity and the ongoing abduction of schoolchildren and teachers have cast a shadow over this year’s Children’s Day celebrations.

In a statement marking Children’s Day, signed by the state coordinator, Dr Rosemary Odigbo, the organisation conveyed goodwill to children across Oyo State and the country at large.

She, however, raised alarm over increasing security threats affecting schools and surrounding communities, noting with concern that some victims of recent attacks are still in captivity.

It was recalled that armed men stormed parts of Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, targeting schools including Baptist Nursery and Primary School, Yawota, LA School, Esinele, and Community High School, Ahoro-Esinele, during which an assistant head teacher and a commercial motorcyclist were killed.

Odigbo described the incident as a painful occurrence that has dimmed the spirit of this year’s celebration for children.

As Muslims across the country observe Eid-el-Kabir, she also prayed for comfort for families who lost loved ones in the attack, while urging those awaiting the return of abducted relatives to remain hopeful.

She called on government authorities, security agencies, and other stakeholders to intensify efforts to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers.

According to her, every child deserves safety, protection, and access to education in a secure environment.

Odigbo also encouraged children to avoid violence, embrace peace, and show kindness in their interactions with others.

She concluded by expressing hope for a safer society for all children and extended goodwill to families during the festive period.
