The Kebbi Development Forum (KDF) has expressed deep concern and sorrow over the deadly Lakurawa attack on eight communities in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State, which reportedly claimed 35 lives and led to the rustling of several cattle.
In a statement signed by the Chairman of the KDF Executive Council, Dr Sa’idu Abubakar-Illo, and made available to journalists in Birnin Kebbi on Monday, the group condemned the assault, describing it as brutal, inhumane and a grave threat to peace and stability.
The forum extended heartfelt condolences to the Kebbi State Government, the Argungu Emirate Council and bereaved families, describing the incident as a painful tragedy for the entire state.
It also expressed solidarity with residents affected by similar attacks in Shanga, Ngaski and Yauri local government areas, offering prayers for the eternal rest of those who lost their lives.
KDF further denounced alleged threats reportedly issued by armed groups to communities in Besse and Zaria Kala-Kala in Koko-Besse Local Government Area, as well as Utono in Ngaski Local Government Area, where criminals were said to be operating openly and intimidating residents.
The forum called on relevant authorities to act swiftly and decisively, warning that delays could worsen tensions and deepen insecurity across vulnerable communities.
While commending the Kebbi State Government and security agencies for their intervention efforts, the group stressed the need for a more decentralised and community-driven security framework.
It urged stronger engagement of local authorities, traditional rulers and community stakeholders to enhance intelligence gathering, early response and coordinated action against criminal activities.
“Security can no longer be treated as the sole responsibility of federal or state authorities, especially given the evolving nature of these threats,” the statement noted.
The forum emphasised that empowering grassroots institutions would improve resilience, promote rapid response and strengthen community safety mechanisms.
It also appealed to the Federal Government and neighbouring countries to intensify cross-border cooperation to dismantle criminal networks and curb transnational insecurity.
The group reaffirmed its resolve to continue advocating sustainable solutions that address both the immediate dangers and the underlying drivers of insecurity in Kebbi State and beyond.
