Kano Intensifies Campaign for Improved Menstrual Hygiene

Kano, June 2, 2026 – The Kano State Government has unveiled a dedicated unit within the Ministry of Health aimed at improving menstrual health awareness, adolescent wellbeing and hygiene management among girls across the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran, disclosed this during a media engagement held to commemorate the 2026 World Menstrual Hygiene Day.

Observed globally on May 28, the annual event seeks to raise awareness about menstrual health and promote access to safe hygiene practices. The 2026 theme is “Together for a Period-Friendly World.”

Labaran explained that the occasion serves as a platform to educate women and girls on the importance of maintaining proper menstrual hygiene and breaking harmful misconceptions surrounding menstruation.

He reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to strengthening healthcare services for women and children, noting that menstrual health remains a key component of adolescent wellbeing.

According to the commissioner, many young girls continue to face discrimination, anxiety and social discomfort during their menstrual cycles due to cultural stereotypes and inadequate awareness.

To tackle these challenges, he said the ministry is partnering with non-governmental organisations, educational institutions and other relevant stakeholders to provide girls with accurate information and guidance on healthy menstrual hygiene practices.

Labaran added that the collaborative effort is expected to promote confidence among adolescent girls while encouraging a healthier and more supportive environment for menstrual health management.
