Gov. Abba Yusuf of Kano State has praised the Governing Council of North-West University, Kano, for appointing a substantive Vice-Chancellor after a rigorous and transparent selection process.
The commendation was made during a meeting where the Pro-Chancellor, members of the governing council, and the university management presented Prof. Amina Bayero as the new vice-chancellor. Bayero, the first female to hold the position at the state-owned university, rose through the ranks as a pioneer academic staff member.
Governor Yusuf urged Prof. Bayero to diligently discharge her duties and collaborate effectively with all stakeholders to advance academic excellence during her five-year tenure. He assured the university management of the state government’s commitment to addressing institutional challenges, including the payment of all outstanding earned academic allowances to staff before the end of December.
He also directed the Commissioner for Land and Physical Planning to review the university’s land holdings and revoke any illegal allocations or encroachments carried out by previous administrations.
Prof. Hafiz Abubakar, the Pro-Chancellor, stated that the selection process for the substantive vice-chancellor lasted ten months and was unanimously endorsed by the Governing Council. He noted that the appointment of the university’s first female vice-chancellor had been widely welcomed.
In her remarks, Prof. Bayero thanked God for the opportunity to serve and pledged her total commitment to the role, outlining a 14-point agenda aimed at repositioning the university for enhanced academic and administrative excellence.
