Farmers in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State have expressed confidence in a productive farming season, following the onset of rainfall across the region.
However, they have called on authorities to ensure the timely availability and distribution of fertilisers, improved seeds and other essential farm inputs to guarantee higher yields.
In separate interviews on Monday, several farmers told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the early rains had renewed optimism for increased agricultural activity across the state.
One of the farmers, Aliyu Mustapha, said he was hopeful that the season would be successful if rainfall remained steady and well distributed.
He explained that preparations were already underway on his farm and expressed gratitude for the rains, adding that adequate and affordable access to inputs remained crucial for a good harvest. According to him, government and relevant stakeholders should ensure that fertilisers and other inputs are both available and within reach of farmers.
Another farmer, Yunusa Ibrahim, noted that while enthusiasm for farming was high, rising costs of agricultural inputs remained a major concern for many producers.
He said many smallholder farmers struggle to afford fertilisers, improved seedlings and agrochemicals due to inflationary pressures, and urged government intervention through subsidies to support food production and rural livelihoods.
Similarly, Shafi’u Hussain said the return of rainfall had brought relief after months of dry and hot weather, adding that favourable weather conditions would encourage farmers to cultivate larger farmlands and boost output.
He stressed that agriculture remains the primary source of income for many households in the region.
A small-scale farmer, Jummai Rabi’u, also shared her expectations for a successful season, noting that farming remains essential to sustaining her family.
She highlighted the difficulties faced by women in accessing inputs and financial assistance, calling for greater support to female farmers.
Across the board, the farmers appealed to government agencies, development partners and financial institutions to enhance access to improved inputs and strengthen agricultural support systems.
They also urged continued training and awareness programmes on modern farming techniques to improve productivity and ensure better yields.
Agriculture continues to play a central role in Jigawa State’s economy, with a large proportion of residents relying on rain-fed farming for food security and income generation.
