The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commended the noticeable increase in Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) across its centres in Enugu State.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Enugu State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, gave the commendation while speaking to journalists in Enugu on Thursday.
He noted that the ongoing nationwide CVR exercise, which began on August 18, 2025 and is expected to end on July 10, 2026, had previously recorded low turnout in the state, but has recently experienced a significant rise in participation over the past two weeks.
According to him, many registration centres in the state now record an average of about 100 new registrants daily, with a large proportion being young people between the ages of 18 and 25.
He attributed the increase to heightened civic awareness, possible mobilisation by stakeholders and civil society groups, as well as the usual rush that often characterises the end phase of national registration exercises. He, however, described the development as a positive sign of growing public confidence in the electoral process.
Chukwu explained that voter registration remains a key civic duty, as it not only enables eligible citizens to vote but also allows participation in processes such as recalling elected officials.
He further noted that an increase in registered voters within a polling unit could influence the creation of additional polling units, wards, and constituencies over time.
The REC also highlighted INEC’s collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), stating that the Permanent Voter Card (PVC) is now linked with the National Identification Number (NIN).
He added that the PVC serves as an important identity document containing personal and voting details, including assigned polling units and wards, making it useful for identification and electoral purposes.
