Ibaji Residents Appeal to Tinubu for Modern Market, Road Rehabilitation

Residents of Ibaji Local Government Area in Kogi State have called on President Bola Tinubu to prioritise the construction of a modern farm produce market and the rehabilitation of the Idah–Ibaji–Otuocha Federal Highway to improve transportation and boost economic activities in the area.

The appeal came in the wake of a tragic boat accident on the River Niger on September 29, in which a wooden boat carrying traders from Ibaji to Ilushi Market in Edo State capsized, resulting in numerous fatalities.

The Coterie of Ibaji Youths (COIY) made the plea in a statement jointly signed by its Board of Trustees Chairman, Mr. Tony Edike, and National Coordinator, Mr. Jerry Nwuchola. The group lamented the community’s prolonged neglect and urged the President to take swift action.

According to COIY, the absence of critical infrastructure—such as motorable roads and a functional market—forces traders to rely on unsafe waterways for transportation. They stressed that a centrally located, modern market in Ibaji would reduce the need for risky boat journeys to distant markets.

“Ibaji is a major producer of rice, yam, cassava, fish, and vegetables, yet the area lacks electricity, good roads, schools, and healthcare facilities,” the group stated.

The youths also urged the federal government to revive the abandoned Idah–Ibaji–Otuocha Highway project, noting that it would shorten travel time between Anambra and Abuja, promote commerce, and create employment opportunities.

They emphasised that the implementation of these projects would help prevent future tragedies while driving economic growth in the region.

“Mr. President, we hold firmly to your Renewed Hope Agenda. Let Ibaji feel this hope through real infrastructure and lasting change,” the statement added.

President Tinubu had earlier expressed his condolences to the government and people of Kogi State over the boat accident, describing the incident as both shocking and deeply unfortunate.
