Healthcare in Abuja Hit by Indefinite Doctors’ Strike

Doctors under the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Monday began an indefinite strike, accusing the authorities of neglecting critical issues affecting medical workers in Abuja.

Dr George Ebong, President of the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD-FCTA), along with other executives, confirmed the action at a press briefing in the capital.

The association had earlier issued a seven-day ultimatum on Aug. 28, demanding urgent government intervention in the FCT health sector. The warning was ignored.

A one-week warning strike followed on Sept. 8, with a notice that full industrial action would commence if concerns were not resolved.

“After reassessing the demands presented to the management of FCT hospitals, the congress noted with deep disappointment that none have been met.

“This confirms our fears of chronic neglect of the healthcare system in the FCT,” said Ebong.

He clarified that the strike was not directed at any individual, including FCT Minister Nyesom Wike or the Health Services and Environment Secretary, Dr Adedolapo Fasawe, but against systemic shortcomings in the health system.

“Our aim is for the government to meet our demands, both financial and non-financial.

“The government of FCTA has refused to listen. This congress has resolved to go on an indefinite strike starting today, Monday, Sept. 15, 2025.”

According to him, the demands include immediate settlement of outstanding salaries owed to 26 members, some of whom have gone unpaid for over seven months.

Other requests cover recruitment of new doctors with timelines, release of the 2025 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF), stoppage of salary deductions, and regularisation of irregular payments.

They also seek prompt promotion of post-Part II Fellows to Consultant cadre, payment of wage award arrears, CONMESS adjustments, renovation of FCTA hospitals, hazard allowance arrears, and settlement of outstanding payments to 2025 external residents.

Ebong warned that the strike would only end when authorities take decisive steps to address the doctors’ grievances and restore confidence in the FCT healthcare system.
