Prominent figures from politics and public service gathered on Sunday evening to honour elder statesman and former Minister of Information, Prof. Jerry Gana, as he celebrated his 80th birthday.
The celebration coincided with the launch of a commemorative book titled “Jerry Gana, Stewardship and Integrity”, authored by Mr. Simon Musa in Abuja.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo described Gana as a man of unwavering integrity, thoroughness, and intelligence. He noted that while political misconduct is often hidden, Gana consistently upheld transparency and accountability.
“He is a man of clear ideas, clear behaviour, and clean relationships. Whatever responsibility he takes on, he executes to the best of his ability,” Obasanjo said, adding his best wishes for Gana’s milestone.
Former President Goodluck Jonathan praised Gana as a distinguished elder statesman who dedicated decades to public service. He said Gana’s life embodies purposeful leadership and continues to inspire generations.
“Your dedication, integrity, and impact motivate many across different spheres. This milestone and the launch of your book reflect your visionary leadership and invaluable contribution to our country,” Jonathan remarked.
Former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, represented by Prof. Yakubu Ocheni, highlighted that the 425-page book covers Gana’s birth, early life, family, and public service. He noted that it does not elaborate on how Gana maintained strong relationships across different administrations or his advisory role during Obasanjo’s third-term agenda saga.
PDP National Chairman, Mr. Tanimu Turaki, described Gana as “a man of credibility, integrity, an icon, and a politician’s politician,” praising his accomplishments in academics, politics, and private life. He expressed confidence that integrity and credibility, like Gana’s, are essential for leadership in the party.
Other dignitaries, including former governors Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara and Aliyu Babgianda of Niger, highlighted Gana’s vision, God-fearing nature, and long-standing contributions to public life. They urged that his legacy be honoured and celebrated widely.
The event’s highlight was the cutting of the birthday cake by Prof. Gana alongside the guests.
In response, Gana expressed heartfelt gratitude to all attendees, including former presidents, the vice-president, ministers, legislators, and the book’s author, for their presence and efforts in making the occasion memorable.
