FRSC warns motorists in Badagry to avoid distractions while driving

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has advised motorists in Badagry to avoid distracted driving, especially during the ember months, to ensure safer roads and reduce accidents.

Mr. Yusuf Sanni, the Unit Commander of the FRSC Badagry Command, gave the advice on Wednesday while launching the 2025 Ember Months Public Enlightenment and Sensitisation Campaign in Badagry.

The campaign, themed “Take Responsibility for Your Safety, Stop Distracted Driving,” focused on raising awareness about the dangers of inattention behind the wheel.

Sanni said the initiative targets drivers who use their phones or engage in conversations while driving, describing such habits as leading causes of crashes.

“The theme highlights the importance of individual responsibility in road safety. Most crashes are linked to driver-related issues like speeding, fatigue, overloading, and phone use while driving,” he said.

He noted that unlike the 2024 campaign, which encouraged passengers to speak up against unsafe driving, this year’s initiative directly calls on drivers to take full responsibility for their safety and that of their passengers.

According to Sanni, the 2025 campaign will address common traffic offences such as reckless driving, drunk driving, failure to use seat belts, and other dangerous practices.

He said the FRSC would deploy more personnel to major highways and carry out free vehicle inspections, rallies, and town hall meetings to reinforce safe driving habits.

The commander also mentioned that the corps was collaborating with driving schools, transport unions, and community leaders to enhance driver education and promote road discipline.

He urged drivers to always observe speed limits and remain vigilant throughout the ember months and beyond.

The awareness campaign featured a road walk from the FRSC Unit office to Badagry Roundabout and various motor parks, where officers and volunteers sensitised motorists and commuters on safe driving.

Transport unions, local stakeholders, and residents of Badagry also participated in the exercise to support the FRSC’s effort to promote responsible road use.
