FRSC steps up enforcement against speeding and mixed loading offences

The Federal Road Safety Corps has stepped up nationwide enforcement and awareness efforts to curb dangerous driving practices and reduce road traffic crashes.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed disclosed this in Abuja, explaining that the agency’s leadership recently held a strategic meeting to assess ongoing operations, identify key challenges, and outline practical measures to improve road safety across the country.

He said the initiative is focused on making roads safer and more accessible for all users. Among the major concerns highlighted was the growing trend of mixed loading, where heavy-duty vehicles transport both passengers and goods, a practice he described as highly dangerous.

Mohammed also pointed to excessive speed as a leading cause of accidents, stressing that it continues to contribute significantly to fatalities and injuries on Nigerian roads.

To address these issues, he said the corps is implementing targeted strategies suited to different regions, while strengthening collaboration with security agencies, community leaders, non-governmental organisations, and other government bodies.

He emphasised the importance of sustained public education, urging drivers to adopt responsible behaviour, obey traffic rules, and prioritise safety at all times.

The corps marshal reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to improving its operations and maintaining safer roads, noting that enforcement would be intensified against reckless drivers who endanger others.

On staff development, Mohammed explained that ongoing training programmes for personnel are part of long-term reforms, with noticeable improvements expected over time, particularly as the year progresses.

He expressed confidence that these combined efforts would lead to fewer accidents and a safer road environment for all Nigerians.
