The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State has advised motorists using the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway to adhere strictly to speed limits and traffic regulations, warning that improved road conditions should not be an excuse for reckless driving.
Speaking on Monday, the Itori Unit Commander of the FRSC, Babatunde Gold, expressed concern that the ongoing rehabilitation of the highway, which is nearing completion, has led some drivers to increase their speed, thereby raising the likelihood of road crashes.
According to him, excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of traffic accidents and often worsens the severity of injuries and damage when crashes occur.
He stressed that while smooth roads may tempt drivers to travel faster, the consequences of losing control of a vehicle or experiencing a tyre failure at high speed can be devastating.
Gold also cautioned road users against dangerous practices such as reckless manoeuvres and driving against traffic flow, emphasizing the importance of complying with established road safety rules.
He noted that the corps has continued to collaborate with transport stakeholders, including the National Union of Road Transport Workers, to sensitise drivers on the dangers associated with speeding and other risky driving behaviours.
The FRSC official reaffirmed the agency’s dedication to protecting lives and property, adding that enforcement and public awareness efforts would remain a priority on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway and other major routes within its jurisdiction as authorities work to promote safer road use.
