FRSC Calls on Transport Unions to Promote Road Safety During Yuletide

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has appealed to transport unions in Badagry to collaborate in minimizing road traffic crashes during and after the Yuletide season.

Mr. Yusuf Sanni, Unit Commander of the FRSC in Badagry, made the appeal at a stakeholders’ meeting attended by representatives of various transport unions in the town. He noted that the holiday season typically sees increased human and vehicular movement, making roads high-risk during this period.

Road safety is not just a government responsibility; it’s a collective one. We need stakeholders to work hand-in-hand with us to minimize crashes. Your support, input, and partnership are crucial, especially in rescue operations during accidents,” Sanni said.

He also urged drivers on highways to ensure they possess valid driver’s licenses to avoid arrest, emphasizing that licensing is a critical aspect of road safety.

Chief Akeem Sanni, Branch Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Seme, pledged continued support for the FRSC, adding that drivers without licenses would not be allowed to operate in his parks.

Mr. Bode Akintade, President of Mega City Drivers Union, Badagry, advised drivers to ensure they were in full physical and mental fitness before driving, and to abstain from alcohol while on the road.

Alhaji Ganiyu Adelani, Chairman of Petroleum Marketers in Badagry, urged drivers to apply the knowledge gained from prior training and to always carry their valid licenses.

The meeting also served as a training session for drivers and stakeholders on essential road safety measures. Unions represented included the NURTW, Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), commercial motorcyclists, and tricycle unions.

Sanni concluded that with the backing of transport unions, the FRSC could achieve safer roads, fewer crashes, and faster responses to emergencies.
