Parents in the Federal Capital Territory have expressed mixed opinions on the best approaches to raising children, reflecting shifting social norms, economic pressures, and changing cultural expectations.
In interviews, several parents shared differing perspectives on discipline, communication, and supervision as key elements of child development in modern society.
One parent, Celestina Obianuju, stressed that discipline and respect should remain central to parenting, arguing that strong moral values are necessary for raising responsible adults.
She warned against extremes in parenting style, noting that being overly strict or excessively lenient could negatively influence a child’s behaviour and sense of responsibility.
According to her, balance is essential in child upbringing, adding that children should be corrected when they go wrong in order to learn discipline and accountability.
She explained that she prefers to raise her children the way she was brought up, where correction and discipline were key aspects of parenting.
Another parent, Theresa Ohia, took a different view, saying that modern parenting requires more communication, emotional support, and active supervision rather than strict punishment alone.
She emphasised the importance of understanding children individually, monitoring their online activities, and guiding them towards positive behaviour in an era shaped by social media exposure.
Ohia noted that today’s parenting style is more focused on dialogue and trust-building compared to the stricter approaches commonly used in the past.
She added that spending quality time with children and teaching values through engagement is now considered essential for healthy development.
The differing views highlight the ongoing debate among parents on the most effective way to raise children in a rapidly changing society, with no universally accepted approach.
