Ex-DSS Boss Says Politics Is Tool to Restore Safety in Katsina

The former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Alhaji Lawal Daura, said he entered politics to address insecurity and safeguard lives in Katsina State.

Daura made the remarks on Thursday in Katsina during a reunion of the Government College Funtua Old Boys Association (FOBA), Class of 1969, where members expressed support for his 2027 gubernatorial ambition.

He described himself as a “politics mechanic,” explaining, “Whenever you see a mechanic with his instruments, you know there is a problem. Really, there is a problem in our dear state, and that has been affecting all of us. People are talking about security every time because it is the key to unlock other issues. If you don’t get that key, you cannot address other problems.”

Recalling past challenges, Daura said, “Some years back, there were markets operating at night, but today, some markets can’t even function during the day. Farming, which drives the economy of our state and neighbouring states, has been affected by insecurity. That is why we joined politics. It is not about leadership. The position I held was higher than that of a governor. I have made a name for myself even beyond the country. If it were about money, what would I do with money now?”

He emphasised that his political pursuit is rooted in protecting lives and restoring order, noting, “You hear things like a tale, but they are happening. Human rights abuses occur in homes, on the roads, and everywhere. These realities drew me into politics. I am grateful that my colleagues have offered support even before the journey begins. With the help of Allah, we will do our best and succeed.”

The FOBA Chairman, Alhaji Dr Aliyu Yahaya, praised Daura’s expertise in security, saying he could tackle the state’s insecurity efficiently if given the opportunity. Yahaya also pledged that each member would deliver hundreds of votes should Daura secure the gubernatorial ticket from any political party.
