Delta Assembly Approves Five Bills, Increases 2026 Budget by N65bn

The Delta State House of Assembly has highlighted its legislative achievements over the past year, revealing that it approved five bills and increased the state’s 2026 budget by N65 billion during its third legislative session.

Speaker of the House, Mr Dennis Guwor, disclosed this on Thursday in Asaba while presenting a review of the activities and accomplishments of the 8th Assembly as it marked its third year in office.

According to Guwor, the legislature considered a total of 11 bills during the period, comprising five executive-sponsored bills and six introduced by individual lawmakers.

He stated that four of the five bills passed by the Assembly had already received the assent of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, while one was awaiting approval.

Among the legislation approved by lawmakers were the 2026 Appropriation Bill, the 2025 Supplementary Appropriation Bill and the Anti-Terrorism and Anti-Cultism (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

The Speaker explained that the Assembly reviewed the 2026 budget proposal and raised it from N1.664 trillion to N1.729 trillion to accommodate additional funding for priority projects and development programmes across the state.

He described the Delta State Revenue Service Bill, 2026, as a significant reform aimed at strengthening internally generated revenue and addressing the challenge of multiple taxation.

Guwor reiterated the Assembly’s dedication to its constitutional mandate, noting that lawmakers had continued to discharge their responsibilities in lawmaking, oversight and representation.

He added that the legislature had maintained a productive working relationship with the executive arm of government while upholding the independence of both institutions.

According to him, this cooperation has supported the implementation of key government policies and development initiatives across the state.

The Speaker pointed to several infrastructure projects undertaken during the period, including flyovers in Uvwie, Warri, Ughelli and Agbor, alongside improvements in road infrastructure and healthcare delivery.

He further noted that the Assembly successfully screened and confirmed nominees for various state commissions and considered a number of audited financial reports submitted for legislative approval.

Guwor assured residents that the House would continue to prioritise legislation and oversight activities that promote transparency, accountability and sustainable development, while responding effectively to the needs and aspirations of the people of Delta State.
