Customs Seizes Over 490,000 Tramadol, Polyglycine Pills in Kano; Suspect Nabbed for Attempted Bribery

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Kano/Jigawa Area Command, has intercepted large quantities of illicit drugs valued in thousands along the Kano-Daura corridor.

Comptroller Dalhatu Abubakar disclosed on Thursday that officers seized 261,750 capsules of Polyglycine (300mg) and 228,700 tablets of Tramadol Hydrochloride (225mg) hidden inside five jumbo agro sacks.

The suspect arrested in connection with the smuggling attempt allegedly tried to bribe customs personnel with ₦455,500, but was immediately taken into custody.

Speaking while handing over the seized items and suspect to the Deputy Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mohammed Maiaduwa, Abubakar warned of the dangerous consequences of drug abuse. He linked the trafficking of such substances to insecurity, crime, moral decline, economic setbacks, and social unrest in the region.

He added that the operation was carried out in line with Sections 55C and 234 of the Nigeria Customs Service Act, 2023, which empower customs to safeguard public health and prevent the circulation of contraband goods.

In his remarks, NDLEA Deputy Commander Maiaduwa assured that the agency would continue its investigation and ensure that those found culpable are prosecuted. He also emphasized NDLEA’s strong partnership with security agencies in the fight against drug trafficking.
