Court Jails 20-Year-Old Driver for Stealing Phone from Tricycle in Jos

A Magistrate’s Court sitting in Jos on Monday sentenced a 20-year-old driver, Victor Jonah, to one year imprisonment for stealing a mobile phone from a tricycle.

The Magistrate, Mrs Irene Pati, handed down the sentence after Jonah pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of mischief and theft.

Pati, however, gave the convict an option of a N10,000 fine or six months imprisonment for mischief, and another N10,000 fine or six months imprisonment for theft. She ruled that both sentences should run concurrently.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Insp. Ibrahim Gokwat, told the court that the case was reported on Dec. 29, 2025, at the Gada Biu Police Station by the complainant, one Alheri Victor.

Gokwat said the convict stole the phone from the tricycle and later contacted the complainant, asking her to come and retrieve the phone at a location he provided.

He added that the offence contravened the Plateau State Penal Code Law.
