Contractors’ Protest: House of Representatives to Reconvene Wednesday

The House of Representatives has announced plans to resume plenary on Wednesday, revising its earlier decision to reconvene on Tuesday, November 11, according to the Clerk of the House, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the House had previously adjourned to allow its leadership to engage with the Federal Government over the delayed payments owed to local contractors for completed projects.

Earlier, a group of contractors had blocked access to the National Assembly complex, preventing lawmakers and staff from entering as they protested the non-payment of their dues, vowing to continue demonstrations until their demands were met.

In response, the House issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Minister of Finance, Mr. Wale Edun, and the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Mr. Atiku Bagudu, urging them to expedite the settlement of outstanding payments for contracts executed under the 2024 and 2025 budgets.

However, in a memo released on Tuesday evening, Danzaria explained that the decision to resume earlier than planned was influenced by positive updates regarding the payment process.

He noted that the early reconvening would allow the House leadership to brief members on the progress made in resolving the issue with the executive arm of government.

Danzaria added that the House would formally reverse its previous adjournment resolution during Wednesday’s plenary to continue with legislative business without further delay.

Members have been advised to ensure their availability for the session as the chamber resumes its regular proceedings.
