Commissioner Highlights Water Supply as Key to Akwa Ibom’s Development

The Akwa Ibom State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to improving access to clean and safe water through a series of reforms and infrastructure projects targeting both urban and rural communities.

Speaking during the Urban Water Supply Sector Report in Nigeria: Progress, Challenges and the Way Forward workshop held in Abuja on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Water Resources and Sanitation, Mr Ubuo Ubuo, said the initiatives are designed to enhance water availability and strengthen service delivery across the state.

According to him, the government is investing heavily in the rehabilitation of existing facilities, expansion of water distribution networks and institutional reforms aimed at meeting the increasing demand for potable water.

He explained that current projects include the upgrade and expansion of urban water schemes, construction of additional water facilities and extension of services to communities with limited access to clean water.

Ubuo noted that efforts are also being made to improve the operational efficiency of water agencies to ensure proper management and long-term sustainability of infrastructure within the sector.

The commissioner disclosed that the state government is collaborating with development partners and relevant federal authorities to secure technical expertise and financial support needed to drive ongoing improvements.

He further revealed that a comprehensive review of facilities managed by the Akwa Ibom Water Company is underway to identify critical infrastructure gaps and guide future investments aimed at restoring and expanding water supply services.

According to him, the state is implementing a dual approach that focuses on strengthening urban water systems while simultaneously expanding rural access through the Akwa Ibom Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (AK-RUWATSAN).

Ubuo said Governor Umo Eno has directed that efforts be intensified to improve water availability across all 369 wards in the state as part of broader programmes to enhance sanitation and public health.

He also highlighted ongoing measures to improve water quality, including the chlorination of public water facilities and other interventions designed to provide residents with safer drinking water.

The commissioner stressed that reliable access to clean water remains essential for public health, economic growth and improved living standards, adding that the government will continue to pursue policies and investments that ensure sustainable water services reach more communities across the state.
