Abuja, May 28, 2026 — The National Librarian and Chief Executive Officer of the National Library of Nigeria, Prof. Chinwe Anunobi, has called on Nigerian children and young people to cultivate a strong reading culture as a foundation for personal growth and national development.
She made the appeal in a goodwill message marking the 2026 Children’s Day celebration in Abuja, stressing that reading remains essential for learning, critical thinking, and self-empowerment.
Anunobi noted that consistent reading helps young people develop the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to make meaningful contributions to society.
“Reading opens the door to knowledge, opportunity and leadership.
“When you read, you build the ideas, skills and confidence required to shape your future and make a difference in your country.
“Every leader, innovator, and change-maker began with a book,” she said.
She also pointed to ongoing efforts in the education sector under the federal government’s Renewed Hope agenda, as well as initiatives by the Ministry of Education, which she said are expanding learning opportunities for children across the country.
According to her, these policies are designed to improve access to quality education for all Nigerian children regardless of background or location.
The National Librarian encouraged young people to take advantage of the National Library of Nigeria’s resources, including book clubs, literacy centres, and digital learning platforms.
She further urged them to read widely, especially materials that reflect Nigeria’s history, culture, languages, and national achievements.
“The National Library of Nigeria is committed to strengthening reading culture and promoting lifelong learning across the country.
“Through our libraries and digital platforms, we are making books and knowledge more accessible to young people.
“I encourage you to visit, join reading communities, and explore more Nigerian stories,” she added.
Anunobi reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to promoting literacy in line with national development goals and its 2025–2030 strategic plan.
