Badagry Marks Seven Days of Mourning for Akran

The Badagry Local Government Chairman in Lagos State, Mr Babatunde Hunpe, has announced a seven-day mourning period in honour of the late Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi I, who passed away on Monday.

Hunpe made the announcement in Badagry through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Austin Kriko, while formally confirming the demise of the revered monarch.

“With the approval of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, I announce with deep sorrow the passing of His Royal Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, the Akran of Badagry Kingdom.

“The Akran joined his ancestors peacefully on Monday, January 12, after a long, distinguished and impactful reign marked by dedication to peace, unity and the preservation of Badagry’s rich cultural heritage,” the statement read.

The council chairman declared a seven-day mourning period, urging residents of Badagry to use the time to reflect on the late monarch’s exemplary leadership, enduring values and lifelong service to the local government, Lagos State and the nation.

“His Royal Majesty was more than a traditional ruler; he was a bridge between generations, a respected custodian of culture and a moral guide to his people.

“He was a father figure whose wisdom, counsel and generosity touched lives across the kingdom and beyond,” Hunpe added.

He extended condolences to the Council of Obas and Chiefs in Badagry Local Government and Lagos State, the royal family and the entire Badagry community.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had earlier expressed deep sadness over the monarch’s death, describing it as a significant loss to Badagry, Lagos State and Nigeria.

In a condolence message issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Gboyega Akosile, the governor said the monarch’s passing marked the end of an era defined by wisdom, cultural preservation and unwavering commitment to the development of Badagry.

The late Akran ruled the ancient Badagry kingdom for nearly 49 years, leaving behind a legacy of stability, tradition and service.
