Army Refutes Sabotage Claims, Explains Circumstances Surrounding Soldier’s Death in Katsina

The 17 Brigade of the Nigerian Army in Katsina State has clarified the circumstances surrounding the death of Corporal Ude Jude, dismissing reports suggesting internal sabotage and negligence as misleading.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Katsina, the Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the brigade, Capt. Abayomi Adisa, described the circulating claims as false and intended to misinform the public.

Adisa explained that the deceased was not a Lieutenant, as widely reported, but a corporal who enlisted in 2012 under the 67 Regular Recruit Intake.

According to him, the incident leading to the soldier’s death did not occur within the barracks. Instead, Jude sustained injuries while on deployment at a Forward Operating Base in Funtua.

He stated that on February 16, at about 8:30 p.m., the soldier, who hailed from Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State, reportedly left his duty post to purchase personal items when he was attacked.

Preliminary findings, however, indicated that the incident arose from a physical confrontation with a civilian linked to a personal dispute.

The army spokesperson said the injured soldier received immediate first aid before being evacuated to the 17 Brigade Medical Centre, where he underwent continued treatment. He was later relieved of duty to allow for proper recovery, as medical reports confirmed he had suffered stab wounds and other injuries consistent with a violent encounter.

Despite weeks of medical care and monitoring, the soldier reportedly collapsed outside his residence on March 24, 2026, shortly after receiving treatment. He was rushed back to the medical facility but was confirmed dead on arrival.

Adisa noted that the Garrison Commander supervised arrangements following the soldier’s death, including the provision of a coffin and mortuary services, with additional support from the 82 Division Garrison in Enugu.

He added that all necessary military items were handed over to the deceased’s next of kin, while the family was formally notified in line with established procedures. The brigade also maintained communication with the family and provided security support during the burial.

Addressing the delay in issuing an official statement, Adisa said it was necessary to verify facts and consult relevant authorities to ensure accuracy.

He assured that efforts are ongoing to identify and apprehend those responsible for the attack, stressing that justice would be pursued.

While expressing condolences over the loss, the brigade reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare of its personnel, as well as professionalism and transparency, and urged the public to rely on verified and official sources for information.
