Andrea Usoh of Edo State produced a commanding display to capture the Wheelchair Women’s Singles crown at the 2026 CBN National Open Championship, defeating Delta’s Chituru Nwazuzu 6-0, 6-1 in the final held in Abuja.
The championship match took place at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, where Usoh dominated proceedings from start to finish.
The Edo athlete controlled the contest with aggressive shot-making and excellent movement around the court, sweeping through the opening set without conceding a game.
Although Nwazuzu showed greater resistance in the second set, Usoh remained focused and continued to dictate play, earning multiple service breaks before wrapping up the set 6-1 to secure the title convincingly.
The triumph marked the culmination of an outstanding tournament for Usoh, who demonstrated consistency and superiority throughout the wheelchair women’s event.
Reacting after her victory, Usoh described the achievement as a memorable moment, revealing that it was her first triumph at the competition despite participating for the past decade.
“This is the first time I am winning this tournament in ten years, and I feel so great.
“It shows that I am making progress, and by God’s grace I hope to achieve even more next year,” she said.
She credited her success to discipline, commitment and regular training.
“I won through hard work. Hard work truly pays, and my coach can testify to that.
“I spend a lot of time training because I have goals I want to achieve, and by God’s grace I will get there,” she added.
Despite finishing second, Nwazuzu expressed satisfaction with her progress and remained optimistic about future success.
“I am happy because reaching the final is not easy. I used to be ranked number three in Nigeria, but now I am number two.
“I worked hard to get here, and I will continue training so I can become champion in the future,” she said.
In the Wheelchair Men’s Singles final, Alex Adewale successfully defended his title after recording a dominant 6-0, 6-1 victory over Rasaq Bankole, rounding off another impressive performance in the championship.
