Anambra Government to Integrate Bicycle Lanes Into Road Designs – Commissioner

Awka, June 5, 2026 — The Anambra State Government says it will begin incorporating dedicated bicycle lanes into the design of major roads across the state as part of efforts to improve safety and promote alternative transportation.

The State Commissioner for Transport, Mr Eddy Ibuzo, disclosed this during an interview with journalists in Awka on Friday.

He said the initiative is aimed at encouraging the use of bicycles as a viable means of transport while enhancing the safety of riders and other road users.

According to him, road infrastructure must be designed to accommodate all categories of users, including motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Ibuzo added that he would work closely with the Ministry of Works to ensure bicycle lanes and pedestrian walkways are included in road designs and made part of contract specifications for contractors.

He noted that bicycle transportation is widely used in many developed countries due to its health, environmental, and economic benefits.

The commissioner said the policy aligns with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s broader vision for sustainable infrastructure and long-term development in the state.

He expressed concern that many existing road projects do not consider cyclists in their design, unlike practices in parts of Europe, Asia, and other regions where cycling infrastructure is prioritised.

“This administration is committed to ensuring that all road users—drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians—are properly catered for in our transport system,” he said.

He called on contractors handling road projects in the state to integrate bicycle lanes and walkways into their plans to improve safety and ease traffic flow.

Ibuzo also reiterated that the collection of transport union levies remains banned in Anambra State, urging residents to report any cases of illegal collection to the appropriate authorities for action.
