Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen is closing in on Rashidi Yekini’s longstanding goal record for Nigeria after scoring twice against Mozambique.
Nigeria routed Mozambique 4-0 in their 2025 AFCON Round-of-16 match at the Complexe Sportif de Fès in Morocco, with goals from Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, and Akor Adams.
Osimhen found the net in the 25th and 47th minutes, bringing his international tally to 34 goals—just three shy of Yekini’s record.
The Galatasaray forward was substituted in the 63rd minute following a brief on-field exchange with Lookman.
He opened the scoring by tapping in an assist from Akor Adams and doubled the lead early in the second half from Lookman’s pass.
The match also marked Osimhen’s 50th appearance for Nigeria, highlighting his growing influence within the national team.
Yekini retired in 1998 as Nigeria’s all-time top scorer with 37 goals from 62 appearances, a milestone that has stood for decades.
Since March 2025, Osimhen has been in fine form, netting nine goals in 10 matches for the Super Eagles.
He surpassed Segun Odegbami to become Nigeria’s second all-time top scorer in March 2025 and continues to edge closer to Yekini’s mark.
Despite chasing the record, Osimhen stressed that his priority is the team’s success.
“I don’t think about records. I just focus on helping the team, contributing with goals and assists,” he said.
Osimhen has now scored three goals at AFCON 2025, placing him joint second in the tournament’s scoring chart.
Nigeria will next face either Algeria or DR Congo in Saturday’s quarter-final, aiming to maintain their winning run in the competition.
