AFCON 2025: Hosts Morocco Face Tanzania in High-Stakes Round of 16 Clash

Hosts Morocco will take on Tanzania in a Round of 16 showdown at the 2025 CAF Africa Cup of Nations as both teams chase contrasting ambitions in Rabat.

The encounter is scheduled for Sunday at the Complexe Sportif Prince Moulay Abdellah, with kick-off set for 6 p.m. Nigerian time, amid strong home support for the Atlas Lions.

The fixture brings together a Moroccan side seeking redemption on home soil and a Tanzanian team aiming to extend a historic debut run in the knockout stage.

This will be only the second AFCON meeting between the two teams, following Morocco’s 3-0 victory in the group stage of the 2023 tournament. Overall, Morocco have dominated the fixture historically, winning seven of their eight previous encounters across all competitions.

Tanzania’s only victory came in a 2014 World Cup qualifier in Dar es Salaam, but Morocco have since won the last five meetings, keeping clean sheets in four of them. The North Africans also edged Tanzania 1-0 at the 2024 African Nations Championship on their way to lifting the title.

For Tanzania, the match represents their first-ever appearance in the AFCON knockout rounds, secured with a 1-1 draw against Tunisia in the group stage. They advanced with just two points, the lowest tally by a team to reach this stage since the introduction of best third-placed qualifiers.

Despite the odds, the Taifa Stars arrive with growing confidence, having lost just one of their last five AFCON matches. They have scored in all three group games, with Feisal Salum becoming the first domestically based Tanzanian player to score at AFCON since 1980.

Morocco, meanwhile, are making their fourth Round of 16 appearance but carry the burden of recent disappointments, having exited at this stage in both 2019 and 2023. They have also conceded in each of their last five AFCON knockout matches.

However, the hosts have been impressive in attack at the current tournament. Brahim Diaz has scored in all three group matches, equalling a national record, while he and Ayoub El Kaabi jointly lead Morocco’s scoring chart with three goals each.

Morocco have dominated possession statistics and recorded the highest number of passes and shots on target at the tournament, though efficiency in front of goal remains a concern.

Tanzania have adopted a more compact and disciplined approach, conceding possession but making the most of their chances, scoring three goals from 15 shots on target.

Morocco coach Walid Regragui said his players are aware of the pressure that comes with hosting the tournament but remain focused on delivering a strong performance.

“At this stage, history does not matter. What matters is intensity, concentration and efficiency,” he said, adding that his side must avoid conceding early as they have in past knockout matches.

Tanzania coach Miguel Gamondi described the encounter as a historic moment for his team, insisting they are ready to compete.

“We are here to fight for our dream. The pressure is on the hosts, and we will play with courage, organisation and belief,” he said.

While Morocco enter the match as clear favourites, Tanzania will be hoping discipline, belief and timing can fuel another AFCON upset.
