SWAN Pushes for Improved Sports Infrastructure in Anambra under Soludo

The Anambra Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to construct an Olympic-standard stadium to enhance sports development and youth engagement in the state.

The appeal was made in a communiqué signed by SWAN Chairman, Chimezie Anaso, and Secretary, Uche Ndeke, issued on Tuesday in Awka.

The association also encouraged the governor to revamp the state’s sports sector and review reward systems for athletes, noting that such measures would inspire greater youth participation and promote empowerment through sports.

SWAN commended Soludo for his ongoing investments in sports, including the establishment of Solution Football Club, but urged the state government to increase the club’s visibility, acceptance, and marketability.

Congratulating the governor on his re-election, the association urged him to build on the achievements that contributed to his electoral success.

“We urge His Excellency to deliver more people-oriented initiatives, particularly in youth development through sports,” the communiqué stated.

The association reiterated its call for the construction of an Olympic-standard stadium in Awka, highlighting that the previously proposed site was reduced to a football pitch due to the development of the Fun City project.

SWAN also praised Tony Nezianya, Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, and other sports icons from Anambra for their recognition during the association’s 60th anniversary celebration in Abuja in October 2025.

It called on the state government to organise a reception in honour of these awardees and other sports ambassadors, acknowledging their contributions to the state’s sporting profile.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to neutrality, objectivity, and advocacy for minority voices in advancing sustainable sports development across Anambra.

SWAN observed a one-minute silence to honour the late Norbert Okonkwo, former Chairman of SWAN Enugu Chapter and Media Officer of Rangers International FC, who was buried on January 30.
