The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Anambra State Command, on Wednesday sensitised drivers, fleet managers, and passengers on the dangers of drunk driving and drug abuse.
The exercise, held in Awka, was in collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
The Sector Commander of FRSC in Anambra, Mrs. Bridget Asekhauno, said the campaign was aimed at reminding road users that driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs poses serious risks to lives and property. She advised drivers and park operators to discourage the sale and consumption of alcohol and drugs within motor parks.
“Drunk driving is a major contributor to road traffic crashes. We brought breathalysers to test drivers and determine their blood alcohol levels. The permissible level is 0.5 per cent,” Asekhauno said.
Mrs. Priscilla Onyema, Chief Superintendent of Narcotics at NDLEA, added that substance abuse affects judgment, coordination, and reaction time, increasing the likelihood of accidents.
Dr. Reginald Facah, Coordinator of the MTN/CCGE/Community Liaison Initiative, said the programme promotes responsible driving habits and ensures drivers adhere to road safety standards to preserve lives and property.
Mr. Oje Alexander, Logistics Manager at Rivers Joy Travel and Tour, commended the FRSC and NDLEA for the initiative, noting that it reinforced the company’s policy of preventing any driver under the influence of alcohol from operating vehicles.
Officials tested all drivers at the park using breathalysers to enforce compliance with the regulations.
