Ogun Police Warn Residents, Facility Operators Amid Rising Drowning Incidents

The Ogun State Police Command has warned residents to be more vigilant around rivers, streams, swimming pools and other water bodies following a recent rise in drowning cases across the state.

The Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, issued the warning in a statement released on Wednesday in Abeokuta by the command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.

Ogunlowo urged members of the public to exercise caution while swimming or engaging in activities around water, stressing that many of the incidents recorded were preventable.

He also cautioned hotel owners and operators of recreational facilities to put adequate safety measures in place, including proper supervision and clear safety markings around swimming pools.

According to him, the loss of lives through avoidable accidents is unacceptable, calling on all stakeholders to take responsibility for their personal safety and the safety of others.

“Hotel owners and operators should ensure that trained lifeguards are on duty at all times. Safety equipment must be provided and properly maintained to guarantee prompt response during emergencies,” the commissioner said.

He added that the police command would continue to engage communities and operators of leisure facilities to enforce strict compliance with safety standards.

Ogunlowo further urged residents to report unsafe swimming environments and cases of negligence to the police for appropriate action.
