Former Nigeria international Segun Odegbami has applauded the Super Eagles’ emphatic 4-0 triumph over Mozambique, saying the display reflected a revival of the country’s attacking identity at the Africa Cup of Nations.
Speaking on the Round-of-16 encounter at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, Odegbami said the performance highlighted a brand of confident, free-flowing football that has been largely absent from the team in recent years.
He observed that the Eagles’ crisp passing, intelligent movement and composure pointed to renewed belief and stronger cohesion within the squad at the 2025 tournament.
Odegbami noted that beyond tactics and individual quality, the standard of Morocco’s playing surfaces has significantly influenced Nigeria’s impressive outings.
“The Super Eagles reminded me of who we truly are when conditions are right.
“Football begins from the ground up, and the pitch is often the unsung hero.
“Morocco’s lush grass has allowed Nigerian football to rediscover itself.
“The difference is clear and undeniable,” he said, adding that the excellent pitches give players freedom to express themselves without fear or limitation.
He described Morocco’s flat, green and well-maintained turfs as among the finest globally, creating an environment where the game can be played with creativity and precision.
Odegbami expressed concern over the state of pitches in Nigeria, arguing that even the Uyo Township Stadium falls short of the standards seen at the AFCON venues in Morocco and Côte d’Ivoire.
He called for sustained investment in top-quality natural grass pitches across major stadia, backed by proper maintenance systems.
“Until our playing surfaces are improved, our football will continue to struggle,” Odegbami cautioned.
The victory over Mozambique has moved Nigeria to within two wins of the AFCON final scheduled for January 18.
The Super Eagles will next take on either Algeria or DR Congo in the quarter-finals, setting the stage for a demanding test as the tournament reaches its decisive phase.
