AFCON 2025: Brief Tension as Osimhen Reacts, Lookman Steps In

Victor Osimhen’s animated reaction briefly drew attention during Nigeria’s emphatic 4-0 victory over Mozambique at the Fes Sports Complex in their AFCON round-of-16 encounter.

The striker, who netted twice in the match, showed visible frustration after Ademola Lookman opted against a passing option, creating a short-lived moment of tension before Osimhen was substituted in the 70th minute.

Addressing the issue after the game, Lookman played down any suggestion of discord, stressing that unity and success remain the team’s overriding focus at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

“Victor is our main man,” Lookman said. “He’s an outstanding striker and very important to the team. These things happen in football, but they don’t affect our bond.

“I play for the badge and for my teammates. Whether it’s goals or assists, the team always comes first.

“Victor’s desire pushes all of us. We understand each other and keep working hard.

“We stay composed, respect decisions and concentrate on what lies ahead,” he added.

Osimhen has now recorded three goals and three assists in the competition, while Lookman leads Nigeria’s scoring chart with three goals and four assists, highlighting the squad’s attacking strength.

With four consecutive wins so far, Nigeria have booked their place in the quarter-finals, where they will face either DR Congo or Algeria.
