The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has provided cash assistance and relief materials to victims of the 2024 accidental airstrike in Sokoto State, which occurred on December 25, 2024, during a joint operation under Operation Fansan Yamma. The airstrike, aimed at targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group in Silame Local Government Area, tragically resulted in the death of 13 people and left several others injured.
The Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, represented by the Chief of Civil-Military Relations, Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, presented the donations to Gov. Ahmad Aliyu of Sokoto State and the Chairman of Silame LGA, Alhaji Lawalli Gittarana.
Aneke described the incident as unfortunate, expressing sympathy to the victims’ families and the state government. He noted that a fact-finding team had previously investigated the incident and that the NAF had taken responsibility for compensating affected livestock, farmlands, and other damages as part of relief efforts.
“The incident was not intentional. It occurred during an operation targeting criminal elements in the area based on a calculated plan,” Aneke said. He also reaffirmed NAF’s commitment to civilian harm mitigation, emphasizing that all operations follow strict rules of engagement to prevent harm to non-combatants.
Aneke pledged continued strategic operations to eliminate terrorists, bandits, and kidnappers in the region and encouraged community support to ensure the success of military exercises. He commended Gov. Aliyu for facilitating engagement with the victims’ families and affirmed the NAF’s dedication to sustaining peace and security in the area.
In his remarks, Gov. Aliyu recalled that the state government had previously provided N20 million in aid, along with medical care and logistics, immediately following the incident. He announced an additional N35 million donation to the victims and bereaved families, praising the NAF for its empathy and responsible approach.
The event concluded with prayers offered by scholars for the repose of the victims’ souls, as well as for national peace, progress, and stability.
