The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has assured residents of the timely completion of key road projects currently underway across the territory.
Wike gave the assurance in Abuja on Saturday during an inspection of the Wuye–Ring Road II project and the dual carriageway from Airport Road to Kuje.
He reaffirmed that the Airport–Kuje road would be completed before the third anniversary of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. According to him, the project has made significant progress, particularly in rock blasting and landscape preparation.
The minister commended Arab Contractors for maintaining high construction standards, noting that the road, when completed, would greatly enhance transportation and housing opportunities for residents of Kuje and surrounding communities.
“By the time this road is commissioned, which is not less than eight lanes, it won’t take 15 to 20 minutes to reach the city centre,” Wike said. “Residents of Kuje will no longer need to relocate to the city to enjoy urban living. This is what development and the Renewed Hope Agenda are all about.”
Wike also reiterated his commitment to improving security and waste management in both the city centre and satellite towns. He acknowledged that while security incidents occasionally occur, Abuja remains one of the safest cities in Nigeria.
He linked ongoing infrastructure projects—such as the Light Up Abuja initiative—to security improvements. “Light Up Abuja is not just to beautify the city but also to enhance security. Security challenges happen everywhere, even in developed countries like the U.S. But Abuja has been relatively safe, and security agencies deserve credit,” he added.
On waste management, the minister addressed the issue of indiscriminate refuse dumping along major corridors, including Airport Road and the Nyanya–Karshi axis. He revealed that the FCT Administration will award a new waste disposal contract within two weeks, stressing that only contractors with proven capacity will be engaged.
“We are not happy with the current situation, but measures are being put in place to ensure proper refuse disposal. We will no longer allow political contractors without the required capacity to handle such an essential service,” Wike assured.
Residents of satellite towns also used the opportunity to appeal for urgent attention to dilapidated road networks, particularly within Federal Housing Estates.
Wike reiterated his administration’s commitment to infrastructure renewal, improved urban services, and balanced development across the six area councils of the FCT.
