Sarkozy found guilty on some counts in Libyan campaign funds case

A Paris criminal court on Thursday found former French president Nicolas Sarkozy guilty on some counts in his trial over alleged campaign financing from Libya.

The court convicted Sarkozy of criminal conspiracy but acquitted him of charges of bribery, illegal campaign financing, and benefiting from the embezzlement of public funds.

Sarkozy, who has consistently denied all allegations, is expected to receive his sentence later on Thursday morning. The verdict is not yet final, and the former French leader has the right to appeal.

The case centers on accusations that Sarkozy’s 2007 presidential campaign received illicit funds from the regime of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, a claim he has repeatedly rejected as politically motivated.
