The 82 Division of the Nigerian Army has dismissed claims that its personnel intimidated residents of Ochon community in Obubra Local Government Area during a land dispute with Alesi community in Ikom.
In a statement released on Sunday in Enugu, Lt.-Col. Olabisi Ayeni, Acting Deputy Director of Army Public Relations, described the allegations as false and misleading, stressing that they were aimed at discrediting the military’s peacekeeping efforts.
According to Ayeni, troops from the 245 Battalion are stationed in the disputed area solely to provide internal security, protect lives and property, and support civil authorities in maintaining order. He noted that their activities are conducted strictly within constitutional boundaries.
Following renewed clashes between the two communities on September 19, 2025, soldiers were deployed to prevent further violence and restore calm in Ikom and Obubra.
“The Division maintains complete neutrality in communal, ethnic, political, and land-related issues,” Ayeni stated, adding that the Army has no involvement in ownership or control of land in the area.
He reiterated that the Division’s mandate is to safeguard peace and prevent any breakdown of law and order that could put lives and infrastructure at risk.
The Army further assured residents of its commitment to professionalism, discipline, and respect for human rights, while calling on leaders of both communities to pursue lawful and peaceful means of resolving disputes.
Ayeni urged the public to disregard false reports intended to undermine security operations, noting that the Army will continue working closely with other security agencies, government authorities, and traditional rulers to ensure lasting peace in Cross River State.
