The Director-General of the Nigerian Army Resource Centre (NARC), retired Maj.-Gen. James Myam, has commended his predecessor, retired Maj.-Gen. Garba Wahab, for the transformational leadership that repositioned the centre for excellence.
Speaking at a send-forth ceremony held in Abuja on Wednesday, Myam described Wahab as a “shining star” who was recalled from retirement six years ago to steer the centre at a critical time.
“When the centre faced leadership challenges, Army Headquarters turned to him. Through his vision and leadership, he revitalised the centre and set it firmly on the path of achieving its mandate. His tenure was nothing short of stellar,” Myam said.
Prof. Okey Ikechukwu, Executive Director of Development Spec Academy, also paid tribute, describing Wahab as a rare leader whose style defies easy categorisation. “He knew when to be firm, when to negotiate, and when to step back. By simply observing him, you learned how to walk the right path,” Ikechukwu said, urging Wahab to continue offering his leadership qualities to the nation.
Prof. Zara Kwaghe, on sabbatical at NARC, praised Wahab’s mix of discipline and humility. She highlighted his passion for leadership, adherence to rules, and ability to inspire colleagues with confidence that tasks would always be completed.
In his response, Wahab thanked NARC’s leadership and staff for the honour, saying he was humbled by the glowing tributes. “I have my shortcomings, and I know I am not as perfect as I have been described,” he said, stressing that his decisions were always guided by service and fairness.
He urged staff and associates to sustain genuine relationships beyond official duties, adding: “Don’t only call when you need something. Keep the communication lines open.”
Wahab expressed gratitude for the support he received during his tenure, describing the experience as both challenging and rewarding.
The event also featured goodwill messages from several dignitaries, including former Chief of Army Staff and Chairman of the NARC Board of Trustees, retired Lt.-Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau; Senator Ben Bruce; and a number of serving and retired senior military officers.
Among those present were the Chief of Training (Army), Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Ndalolo; Chief of Administration (Army), Maj.-Gen. Lawrence Fejokwu; and Chief of Defence Space Administration, AVM L. I. Oluwatoyin.
