Discussions Open on Repatriation of Nigerian Artifacts From Switzerland

During a courtesy visit to the minister in Abuja, Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, Patrick Egloff, reaffirmed his country’s readiness to work with Nigeria in strengthening cultural ties and expanding cooperation in the creative sector. Both sides highlighted the importance of sustaining dialogue on cultural heritage, with an emphasis on collaboration in the arts and tourism industries.Egloff explained that the process of returning the artifacts began about three years ago, adding that Switzerland hopes to deliver the bronze pieces through Nigeria’s embassy before the end of the year.“This is the first time a Swiss ambassador is holding talks with Nigeria’s Minister of Art and Culture. There are many areas we are keen to explore, and we believe this restitution can serve as a strong foundation for deeper institutional cooperation,” he said.In response, Musawa commended Switzerland for its commitment to restitution and stressed that reclaiming the artifacts was vital for preserving Nigeria’s heritage. She noted that the engagement represents a significant move toward expanding cultural diplomacy between the two countries.According to her, there are vast opportunities for partnership in areas such as animation, design, architecture, hospitality, and tourism.“Recovering these treasures is a priority for Nigeria, and our broader discussions with Switzerland will focus not only on restitution but also on long-term collaboration across creative industries,” the minister added.
