Rotary Club Targets Climate Change with 200-Tree Project in Jos

JOS – The Rotary Club of Jos has planted 200 tree seedlings at the NTA Television College as part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability and combat climate change.

Club president, Mr. Chris Nwanebo, said the initiative aligns with Rotary’s mandate to support green projects and improve urban environments. He noted that, once matured, the trees will enhance air quality, strengthen climate resilience, and boost biodiversity within the college and its surroundings.

“These trees absorb harmful pollutants such as carbon monoxide, sulphur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide, while releasing oxygen. Their roots help bind the soil to prevent erosion, provide shade, and reduce water loss from the soil,” Nwanebo explained.

He appealed to the college management to ensure the seedlings are nurtured to maturity.

Rector of the NTA TV College, Ms. Pauline Suleiman, commended the Rotary Club for the gesture, describing it as a valuable contribution to the institution and its host community.

“These trees will not only serve as windbreakers but also purify the air and improve the overall environment. We will ensure they are properly cared for,” she assured.

The seedlings planted include economic and indigenous species such as cashew, neem, and mahogany.
