The Bureau of Public Procurement and the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation have set up a joint planning committee for the 2026 Federal Permanent Secretaries Retreat.
The committee was inaugurated during a strategic engagement involving senior officials from both institutions, according to a statement issued in Abuja on Friday by the Head of Media and Public Relations at BPP, Zira Nagga.
The retreat is scheduled to hold from July 9 to July 12, and is expected to bring together permanent secretaries and key stakeholders in the federal public service to deliberate on procurement governance and service delivery improvements.
Officials said the initiative marks a renewed collaboration between both agencies aimed at strengthening procurement systems and improving governance across ministries, departments and agencies.
The retreat has, over the years since 2008, served as a high level platform for building capacity, addressing implementation gaps and enhancing coordination between procurement regulators and accounting officers in government institutions.
The 2026 edition is expected to further advance reforms aligned with the Federal Government’s development priorities and improve performance across the public service.
The Director General of BPP, Dr Adebowale Adedokun, commended the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs Didi Walson Jack, for her leadership and commitment to strengthening procurement practices within the civil service.
He noted that procurement remains central to government expenditure, accounting for a significant portion of public spending, and therefore requires continuous capacity development and oversight.
He also described the long standing partnership between both institutions as critical to driving reforms and improving accountability in public finance management.
According to him, permanent secretaries play a key role as accounting officers responsible for policy execution, making their understanding of procurement processes essential for effective governance.
He added that the retreat provides an opportunity to address implementation challenges and align strategies for better outcomes.
Adedokun stressed the need for the 2026 edition to deliver practical and measurable impact, especially as the implementation of the current budget cycle progresses.
A representative of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Dr Danjuma Kalba, said the retreat would further strengthen the capacity of permanent secretaries to ensure efficient use of public resources and improved value delivery.
He assured that the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation would fully support the successful delivery of the programme, noting the importance of collaboration in achieving its objectives.
He added that efforts would be intensified to ensure the retreat meets expectations and contributes meaningfully to public service reforms.
