The Lagos State Government has announced temporary traffic restrictions on the Iddo Bridge corridor in preparation for a critical phase of ongoing rehabilitation works aimed at improving the infrastructure.
The closure is required to enable the installation of heavy steel beams being used in the reconstruction and upgrade of the bridge.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr Oluwaseun Osiyemi, disclosed the development in a statement released on Tuesday.
According to him, the installation exercise will take place in two stages. The first phase is scheduled from 10:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 17, until 5:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 18, while the second phase will be conducted between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 21.
Osiyemi explained that vehicular movement on the affected section of the bridge would be suspended during the specified periods to ensure the safe handling and placement of the steel components by the Federal Ministry of Works.
He advised motorists to plan their journeys ahead and use alternative routes to avoid delays during the temporary closure.
For commuters travelling from Oyingbo and Yaba towards Ijora Olopa, Apapa and Costain, he recommended using Funsho Williams Avenue as an alternative route.
Motorists heading from Marina to Ijora Olopa, Apapa and Costain were advised to access Iddo-Onigbe through the designated ramp, proceed through Oyingbo and continue via Murtala Muhammed Way.
Similarly, road users travelling from Ijora Olopa and Apapa towards Carter Bridge and Marina were urged to connect through Apapa Road, use Eko Bridge and continue their journey through Murtala Muhammed Way, Iddo-Onigbe and Carter Bridge.
The commissioner appealed to members of the public to cooperate with traffic management personnel who would be deployed to regulate vehicular movement and maintain order around the affected areas.
He assured residents and commuters that adequate traffic control measures had been put in place to minimise disruption and facilitate smoother movement throughout the duration of the exercise.
Authorities expressed confidence that the temporary inconvenience would pave the way for improved safety and durability of the bridge once the rehabilitation project is completed.
