LASWA, Interferry Launch Ferry Safety Training for 50 Participants

Efforts to improve safety and professionalism within Nigeria’s inland waterways sector received a boost as the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), in collaboration with Interferry, launched the practical phase of the Ferry Safety Development Programme (FSDP).

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Blue Economy, Mr Oluwadamilola Emmanuel.

According to Emmanuel, the first physical training session under the programme was conducted at the Caverton Marine Ferry Building Facility in Badore, Ajah, Lagos.

He explained that the Ferry Safety Development Programme, regarded as the first of its kind in Africa, is an 18-month initiative designed to enhance technical expertise, strengthen operational standards and encourage a stronger safety culture within the ferry transportation and inland waterways industry.

Emmanuel noted that the practical training segment was introduced to complement the virtual mentorship sessions and self-paced learning modules already being undertaken by participants.

He said exposing trainees to real-life operational settings and globally accepted industry practices would equip them with the knowledge and skills required to improve safety and efficiency across the sector.

The adviser commended Interferry for supporting the programme and acknowledged Caverton Marine for providing the training facility and technical support for the inaugural session.

He also praised the Lagos State Government for its sustained investment in maritime safety, human capital development and initiatives aimed at expanding opportunities within the blue economy.

The training, coordinated by Mr Ukeme Sunday, brought together 50 participants for intensive practical sessions covering vessel design, ferry construction, safety regulations, maintenance procedures and operational best practices.

One of the major highlights of the programme was a technical workshop facilitated by Caverton Marine’s General Manager, Mr Mohammed Ibrahim, who drew from more than 40 years of industry experience to guide participants.

During the session, Ibrahim shared expert knowledge on ferry construction techniques, maintenance requirements and essential safety measures necessary for effective vessel operations.

The organisers expressed optimism that the programme would contribute significantly to building a highly skilled workforce and improving safety standards across the country’s waterways transportation system.
